The fourth installment of the Tom Cruise franchise captured $38.3 million over the four-day holiday frame, according to studio estimates from Hollywood.com

The film, directed by Pixar’s Brad Bird, has done $141.2 million since its almost exclusive release Dec. 21 on IMAX screens, a strategy that has helped the film take the No. 1 spot every day since.

The film will likely surpass the 1996 original’s gross of $181 million, and is within striking distance of Mission: Impossible II, the 2000 John Woo sequel that is the series’ most lucrative at $215 million.

Finishing second again for the weekend was Robert Downey Jr.’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” with $26.5 million. The family sequel “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” came in third with $21 million.

Rounding out the top five were Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse” at No. 4 with $19.2 million and David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” just behind at No. 5 with $19 million.

The quirky romantic drama, starring Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst, bombed at the box office, leaving the filmmaker in a slump. But longtime pal and collaborator Cruise, whom Crowe directed in both Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky, was determined to get the filmmaker back on his feet.

Crowe tells the New York Times, “I wasn’t in a foetal position, but yeah, I was blue… I was deep in the writing cave, and he said, ‘Hey man, you need to be directing. You’re forgetting the joy, the adrenaline.’ He’s like, ‘Let’s go for a drive.’”

The Minority Report star then dragged Crowe to Judd Apatow’s Los Angeles Knocked Up set, so the pair could experience movie magic again.
Crowe adds, “Cruise sidles up to me and goes: ‘See? Get out of your house, man, it’s fun.’ And that’s when I felt like, ‘Yeah, it’s time to direct again.’”

Crowe’s return to feature films, “We Bought a Zoo,” hits cinemas in December (2011).

Cruise will produce and star in “Mission: Impossible IV,” Paramount Studios confirmed on Tuesday.

Joining Cruise as producer will be J.J. Abrams, who also helmed the third installment in the Cruise super-spy franchise.

Both Cruise and Abrams are working together to find a director for the film, which will be released on Memorial Day weekend 2011. The film will go up against Warner Bros.’ “The Hangover 2,” also slated for that weekend.

Cruise first stepped into the “Impossible” shoes of secret agent Ethan Hunt for the original “Mission: Impossible” film in 1996. He reprised the role four years later in the second chapter, directed by John Woo.

The “Mission: Impossible” franchise has grossed more than $1.4 billion globally.
