Cowell said Carey was “enthusiastic from Day One” about “X Factor” and joked that “the fact she selfishly got pregnant is the reason she’s not a judge.”

Carey had twins earlier this year.

Cowell said he hopes Carey will still be involved in the show in an unspecified capacity that could involve working with contestants.

“X Factor” has a two-night launch on Fox, with two-hour shows at 8 on Sept. 21 and 22.

Cowell, 50, surprised his girlfriend with the giant rock as they dined alongside his old flame Jackie St Claire and her husband Carl Michaelson at Mr Chow in Knightsbridge, London.

The X Factor judge is said to have declared he had a special announcement before pulling out the diamond sparkler and placing it on the ring finger of Afghan-born Hussainy, 36.

“Simon may come across as Mr Nasty on screen but he’s a big softie at heart,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“He wanted to do something unexpected and out of character on Valentine’s Day and decided to splash out on a ring.

“Mish was speechless and gave him a huge kiss. He is besotted with her, and she him,” the source added.

The video features footage of such stars as Miley Cyrus and Mariah Carey in the studio recording the track, as well as first hand footage from Haiti. The charity single was officially released for download through iTunes over the weekend.

Mr. Cowell is expected to recruit stars signed to his company, including Susan Boyle and Leona Lewis, as well as other U.S. musicians to record the single.
