Michael Fassbender, in a kind of weird foreshadowing of his character in “Shame,” plays Jung as a Swiss bourgeois who falls for the forbidden fruit of one of his patients, Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), a tremendously neurotic but brilliant young woman whose sexuality is bound up in her feelings for her father and a thick stripe of self-loathing. While navigating the uncertain waters of this affair, Jung starts to work beside Freud (Viggo Mortensen) — or, rather, beneath him, as the imperious Freud will only see Jung as an heir aspiring to his glory. “Keira wanted to play the role. She’s been linked to the production for nearly four years. She’s always loved Audrey Hepburn, who starred in the original movie, and had spent the last year working her backside off with private singing lessons.

She knew she didn’t have a huge voice but she was willing to put the effort in for the role. It would have been a role of a lifetime for Keira, and she’s gutted that it hasn’t worked out.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean star, who is currently appearing in The Misanthrope at the Comedy Theatre on Panton Street, London, was reportedly left petrified of Polish fan, Marek Daniluk, 41, after he waited outside the theatre where she was performing.

In her statement to police, Knightley said she had become ‘worried and distressed’ by his behaviour at the stage door.

Daniluk, of Enfield, North London, was arrested on Thursday night and appeared before the City of Westminster magistrates’ court on Saturday. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and will stand trial in June.

The couple have kept a low-profile existence on the small boat since the start of this year, and, according to neighbors, have fully embraced life on the water.

“They’ve hired the boat until the summer and they seem really happy,” a nearby resident said.

“They spend most weekends on it, brewing up pots of tea. They’re a very sweet couple.

“They like nothing better than strolling along the canal hand in hand and going to the chippie (fish and chips restaurant) for a fish supper.”

Keira Knightley, 24, is currently starring in stage play The Misanthrope at London’s Comedy Theatre while her partner Friend is also treading the boards at the capital’s Garrick Theatre.

A source said: “It’s rare that Rupert and Keira get to spend an extended period of time together so they’re over the moon that they’re both working in London at the moment.

“They regard their houseboat as their sanctuary.”

However, it is unlikely that they will remain in the idyllic hideout for much longer, as Knightley is due to travel to the United States in February to promote her latest film, Last Night.

Waltz, 53, who won a prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s World War II movie “Inglourious Basterds”, will play Freud, regarded by many as the father of modern psychoanalysis.

British actress Knightley, best known for the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” movies, will play one of Freud’s patients in “The Talking Cure”.

The film, directed by David Cronenberg, is based on the play of the same name by British playwright Christopher Hampton.
