Destiny’s Child Highest Awards

The recently disbanded R&B group Destiny’s Child will receive the 2,305th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, coinciding with the release of its live concert DVD, “Destiny’s Child: Live in Atlanta.” Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michele Williams are scheduled to speak at the late-morning ceremony next to the Kodak Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, along with Mathew Knowles, Beyonce’s father, who formed and managed the group. Destiny’s Child, the best-selling all-female group of all time, according to the World Music Awards, made its recording debut in 1997 with “Killing Time,” which appeared on the soundtrack for the film “Men in Black.” Its first album, also titled “Destiny’s Child,” released in 1998, went platinum, selling 3 million copies worldwide, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. The group’s next album, “The Writing’s On The Wall,” released in 1999, did even better, selling 12 million copies. Destiny’s Child underwent a major change early in 2000 when Williams and Farrah Franklin joined Knowles and Rowland, replacing LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson, who had accused Mathew Knowles of keeping a disproportionate share of the band’s profits, attempting to exert too much control, and unfairly favoring his daughter. Franklin left later in 2000, making the group a trio. Destiny’s Child received its first two Grammys in 2001, winning best R&B duo or group with vocals and R&B song for its No. 1 hit, “Say My Name.” A year later it would win best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocals for “Survivor.” Destiny’s Child has also received MTV Music Awards, American Music Awards, World Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards and NAACP Image Awards. After the release of “8 Days of Christmas” in 2001, the group’s members concentrated on solo projects and acting before reuniting in 2004 for the album “Destiny Fulfilled” and a 2005 tour “Destiny Fulfilled … and Lovin’ It.” Beyonce Knowles starred opposite Steve Martin in the recent remake of “The Pink Panther” and will star in “Dreamgirls,” set to be released in September, while also continuing her recording career. Rowland has an album due for release this year and appeared in the TV comedy “Girlfriends” this season. Williams also has an album due out this year and appeared on the TV comedy “Half and Half.” Today’s ceremony is the first of two on consecutive days. Comedian George Lopez is set to receive a star tomorrow, the same day his ABC comedy “George Lopez” broadcasts its 100th episode.
