The Dark Knight has delivered the best weekend box office opening ever.
The record was previously set by 2007’s Spider-Man 3, with $151.1 million ( Dark Knight: $155.34 million)
The Dark Knight - starring the late Heath Ledger as the Joker - earned an estimated $66.4 million on its opening day. It took in $18.5 million in Friday midnight shows alone.
The last Batman installment, 2006’s Batman Begins, grossed $15 million on its opening day and $48.7 million for the weekend.

“The Dark Knight” premiered Monday night in New York, and Heath Ledger’s parents and family were there to see the results.
Heath Ledger’s father put his thumb up when asked what he thought of his son’s final film, The Dark Knight.
“It’s very good,” said Kim Ledger, accompanied by wife Ines. Ledger’s mother, Sally Bell, and older sister Kate Ledger also attended.
Heath Ledger’s sinister interpretation of the Joker in The Dark Knight — the follow-up to the hugely popular Batman Begins — is winning rave reviews, and has put him in the running for a posthumous Academy Award.

“A new video about to go to air in the US claims to show Heath Ledger alledgedly discussing drugs…” Sky News 31/1/08 The footage shown on US show “Insider” shows Ledger alledegly discussing drugs.

The masseuse who discovered Heath Ledger’s body spent nine minutes making three calls to Mary-Kate Olsen before she dialed 911 for help, police said Thursday. She called “Full House” actress a fourth time after paramedics arrived.
The details about the calls do not have any significant bearing on the investigation because authorities believe Ledger had been dead and have ruled out foul play. But they paint a more precise picture of the bizarre series of events surrounding the Australian-born actor’s final moments.
Police originally said the woman made two calls to Olsen seeking her help about what to do, but revised it to four after taking a closer look at phone records. The masseuse, Diana Wolozin, apparently knew both Ledger and Olsen and knew that they were friends.
